- Both players are dealt a hand of two cards to start and the aim is to get a hand worth 9 or as close to 9 as possible. If the player or the dealer (bank) gets 8 or 9 points, the game ends. If not, more cards can be drawn.
In baccarat, points are counted from the numeric value of the card: Aces are worth 1, 2–9 are worth their face value, and 10, J, Q, and K are worth zero. E.g., a 2 and a 5, giving you a total of 7 points. However, hands aren't allowed to go above 9 points. Therefore, if you get a hand worth more than that, 10 is subtracted (e.g. a 7 and an 8 equal 5 instead of 15).
It isn't much more complicated than that. Depending on the version of the game, you might play as the player's hand, or both hands can be controlled by the casino or other players. In other words, it is not always "you against the dealer" like in blackjack. But no matter who plays them, you will always meet the two hands and three betting options.
